Lafferty puts pen to paper on three year deal

He was delighted to sign the new contract and said: "I didn't play as much as I'd like this season, and only about forty times since I've been at the club, so for the manager to turn around and give me three years, as a player with no Premier League experience, was a boost.

"There are guys who played a lot more than me this year who've been let go, so for the manager to show that faith in me is very nice and I want to repay that on the pitch in the next few years.

"In pre-season I want to be competing and fighting for my place."

Lafferty joined the Clarets in January 2012 from Derry City as Eddie Howe moved to fill the gap left by the sale of Danny Fox to Southampton in the previous August. The new boy had to see off the threat initially of Brian Easton who left in the summer of 2012.

But the emergence of Ben Mee as a left back has preventing him establishing himself as first choice. He started in the team at the beginning of last season due to an injury Mee picked up in Cork. He lost that place when Mee was fit and his only other appearances came around the Christmas and New Year period when Mee was again out injured.

He hasn't featured in the first team since he deputised for Mee on 18th January in the 1-1 home draw against Sheffield Wednesday but now leaves for Northern Ireland's two big games in South America with his three year contract signed.
