Lafferty and Duff can't rescue Irish

There were high hopes for the Irish in this game, with all three of the Burnley contingent, Lafferty, Duff and Steve Jones all named as substitutes as they had been in the recent friendly against Finland.

A disastrous defensive performance meant the game was all over and done with as a contest long before half time. They gave away two goals in the first twenty minutes and the Icelandics added a third with eight minutes remaining in the first half.

Manager Lawrie Sanchez made no changes until past the hour and Kyle was the first to be introduced for his fourth cap, and his first in a competitive game. He replaced Hull's Stuart Elliott, a player who has played less than an hour of league football this season, and with less than a quarter of an hour remaining, Duff came on for Plymouth defender Tony Capaldi.

All three Clarets will remain in Ireland with the squad who face group favourites Spain this Wednesday, again at Windsor Park, Belfast. The Spaniards will arrive in Ireland top of the group after a comfortable 4-0 victory over Liechtenstein.
