| George Porter scored a good goal for Colchester |
With Tom Anderson having come back because of a medial ligament injury, but with Luke Gallagher and Jason Gilchrist having made moves to Droylsden on Friday, there were eight to keep a check on and soon Jeff was giving us some positive news of two of them.
Alex MacDonald, who only hours before had extended his loan with League Two Burton, opened the scoring in their home game against fellow promotion chasers Cheltenham, who are managed by Mark Yates who included our former loan defender Keith Lowe in his side.
Macca has become a regular at the Pirelli Stadium. He claimed the assist for their second and they went on to win the game 3-1 and move into the automatic promotion places a point clear of Cheltenham and Clarke Carlisle's Northampton.
MacDonald's goal came on 22 minutes and then, just before half time, George Porter got his first Colchester goal. It was an equaliser in their home game against Crewe, another side managed by an ex-Claret Steve Davis.
Porter's goal counted for nothing unfortunately as his side were beaten 2-1 but while MacDonald's had a bit of good fortune attached to it with a deflection, this was a good goal. Porter made a terrific lung bursting run from the half way line before receiving the ball on the right hand side of the box. There he turned before curling a shot into the far corner.
We've two more players out on loan in League One, Cameron Howieson at Doncaster and Wes Fletcher at Yeovil. Both were again on the bench and yet again Howieson was an unused substitute in their 2-1 win at Bournemouth. Fletcher, meanwhile, made his Yeovil debut, coming on as a substitute with thirteen minutes remaining.
Into the Blue Square Premier League and again it was substitute berths for both Steven Hewitt (Alfreton) and Shay McCartan (Hyde). They didn't get much football. Hewitt was unused by Alfreton boss Nicky Law in a 1-1 draw at Tamworth and McCartan got on with just three minutes remaining in their 3-0 defeat at Gateshead.
Finally, the two most recent outgoing loan players, Gallagher and Gilchrist, were both Blooded by Droylsden for their Blue Square North home game against Guiseley. Both started for the strugglers, who are captained by Joe O'Neill the brother of former Claret Matt. They fell to a 3-0 defeat in which Gallagher played the entire game with Gilchrist substituted on 67 minutes.
