Juke double gives Clarets a draw

Jutkiewicz converted well after running onto a Ross Wallace pass to give us a second minute lead and  then was on hand to turn in an Ashley Barnes cross in the second half just a minute after Celta had scored their first equaliser.

"Danny Ings is out," was the news filtering through outside the Turf last night when the team news was revealed with the striker not even on the bench. Apparently he was signing for Southampton who had scouts at the ground.

The truth was that Danny wanted to play but manager Sean Dyche left him out due to a slight knock that would certainly, according to reports, not have kept him out of a league game.

Two goals for Lukas Jutkiewicz

Other than Ings, plus long term injury victim Sam Vokes and, almost fit again Michael Kightly who made the bench, it was the team that generally played last season with us able to welcome back Tom Heaton in goal for his first game of the pre-season.

A first visit of a new season always leads to you looking round for any changes to the ground. Sometimes it is a new advertising hoarding, and if we've been extravagant then potentially a lick of paint.

This year you'd have needed to get inside the ground some considerable time before kick off to check out all the changes, the most notable being the painted seats in the cricket field stand that have made a huge positive difference.

I've only seen the new tunnel from a distance but this new one is considerably wider than the previous tunnel, of which there is no longer any trace, and, I'm told, very impressive inside.

Sean Dyche was in a much smaller technical area than he was last year, but much closer to the half way line, although the new dug out is considerably bigger and, I think, has 17 seats.

But to the game. I'd no idea that Celta Vigo had started the game with an inexperienced looking side with new coach Eduardo Berizzo naming nine players who have come through their youth system.

Those young players were soon on the back foot with the Clarets taking an early lead just over a minute in.

It came via a superb pass from Wallace. Juke (and I think this might be easier to use than constantly trying to get the correct spelling of Jutkiewicz) moved onto it perfectly before beating the goalkeeper on the near post.

During a first half when we were much the better team he might, with a bit more luck, had a hat trick. He also hit one shot against the foot of the post with Ashley Barnes just unable to get to the rebound, and then saw another effort well saved by the goalkeeper.

If the Preston game was lively and the Blackpool game more sedate, then this one was almost X category as far as pre-season games go with one first half incident that almost led to a mass brawl.

Dean Marney was the Burnley player involved. The Celta Vigo player on the end of his challenge wasn't too impressed and his reaction led to a number of players getting involved.

Referee Mike Jones sorted it out with one yellow card, one of two he showed during the game, and it quietened down again.

At half time it was still 1-0 as the players headed for the corner but it was all to change in the second half. I checked to see if we had made any substitutions and saw there were none, totally unaware that our visitors had changed their entire outfield and this second batch were their more established players.

They were a different proposition altogether. Playing a typical Spanish style of football, they retained the ball really well and in the opening exchanges we really struggled as they took the game to us.

For over 20 minutes it looked very much as though they would draw level, but we held firm until the 69th minute when they scored that deserved equaliser as Álex López finished smartly with a shot high into the net.

At that point I thought they would probably go on and win it but our response was immediate. We got forward straight from the restart and won a throw in on the left. Ben Mee took it, finding Barnes who did really well to get in a cross across the six yard box. Juke was in the box to finish expertly.

It didn't take Celta quite so long to equalise this time. Just five minutes after their first equaliser came the second as Nolito finished smartly from around 15 yards out after the ball had been played into him from the right.

After the flurry of goals it was Burnley who probably looked the more likely but in the end a hugely entertaining game ended all square, giving our visitors a third successive draw in England following a 2-2 result at Norwich and 1-1 at Wolves. They subsequently beat Everton last night 3-1 with Nolito scoring all three.

The game delighted manager Sean Dyche who said of Celta Vigo: "With no disrespect to our previous opponents in pre-season, technically they're a good group we played against. That is why we wanted that game of course and we've got another test on Saturday."
