Joyce back at Burnley

Warren Joyce joined the Clarets in the summer of 1993 from Plymouth Argyle and scored both goals on his league debut as we beat Port Vale 2-1 on the opening day of the season that saw us win at Wembley in the Play Off Final.

He played in that final too after scoring the third and crucial goal in the semi-final win against his previous club at Home Park to add to the two scored in the first half by John Francis. If ever a goal eased the tension that was it.

After playing in around half of the games that season he hardly featured following promotion and spent a couple of months on loan with Hull City. But in 1995/96 he was a virtual ever present before surprisingly being sold to Hull by new manager Adrian Heath.

Joyce became player manager of Hull in November 1998 and was in charge for seventeen months before being replaced by current Tranmere boss Brian Little. His playing career came to an end with his departure from Boothferry Park.

He made a total of 70 league appearances for the Clarets which is exactly the same number of league games as his dad Walter played for us in the early 60s. His dad, who was also a member of the Burnley team that played in the European Cup, sadly passed away in 1999.

In 2001 Warren represented his dad on the pitch when the players from the European campaigns were presented to the crowd. Tomorrow he will be here in his own right as a former Burnley player.
