Joslin still in the middle

Last updated : 31 August 2007 By Tony Scholes
In his 49th year, Joslin, from Newark, is the oldest referee in the Football League and it was thought that he would be retiring at the end of last season. That's not been the case and tomorrow will be his fifth game already this season.

He's a referee I'd never had much of a problem with until last season, but twice at the Turf he had poor games. Previously he'd been an undemonstrative official and more often than not would allow the players to get on with playing. He's presided over three heavy away defeats but even then there were no problems.

Last season he suddenly decided to nit pick, to constantly stop the game, and was over keen on getting out his yellow card, and that was most evident in the Coventry match where he managed to book five players without hardly a foul of note in the game.

Since joining the league list in 1999, he'd never come close to reaching three yellow cards per game in a season, that was until last season when he ended with 134 in 35 games, not far short of four per game. Of those cards, 52 went to home team players and 82 to away team players.

To add to that there were six red cards, with four of them going to away team players. One of the two home players he sent off was Micah Hyde, in our home game against Ipswich, and his first red card last season was Preston's Graham Alexander, in a 2-0 defeat at Norwich.

This season's four matches so far have brought eleven yellow cards; of those five have gone to home players and six to away players. I would much prefer it if it was the Phil Joslin of previous seasons who turned up tomorrow and not the Phil Joslin of last season.

He will be assister by Paul Barnes (Cambridgeshire) and Richard Beevor (Suffolk) whilst the fourth official will be Stephen Artis (Norfolk).
