Jones sacked at Wolves

Jones had been under constant pressure in recent weeks with Chief Executive Jex Moxey constantly having a go at him about the league position being unacceptable and the Priestfield Stadium defeat proved to be the final straw.

Wolves were pre-season favourites for promotion following their relegation from the Premiership at the end of last season but it hasn’t quite worked out for them. They had a nightmare start to the season but looked as though they might be picking up when they won twice away from home in one week, their first away wins since April 2003.

But it didn’t bring about a revival and it was less than two weeks ago that they actually won their first game of the season at Molineux when they beat Derby.

They followed that up four days later with a second home win against QPR.

A week later though and defeat at Gillingham brought Jones’ Wolves career to an end after almost four years in the hot seat. He was appointed on 3rd January 2001, immediately after a Turf Moor win against the Clarets, as a replacement for Colin Lee.

After missing out on promotion in 2002 in the play offs Wolves made it a year later after an easy Millennium Stadium win against Sheffield United. Relegation followed a year later and the poor Premiership form has continued forcing the change today, Wolves becoming the twelfth club to part company with their manager since the start of the season.

John Gregory, Gary Megson and Micky Adams are apparently front runners for the job along with midfielder Paul Ince. Despite having been at fierce rivals West Brom it would be no surprise to see Megson take over.
