Jones in charge in Wales

Last updated : 16 April 2004 By Tony Scholes

It is Michael Jones from Chester, a referee who has been very much in the news recently following the Derby v Walsall game of two weeks ago.

Derby manager George Burley was furious after the game and said, "The referee won the game for Walsall this afternoon. It was such an important match for him to get it so wrong."

Even Jones himself admitted that he got one major decision wrong that cost Derby a goal and held his hand up admitting that he had made a terrible mistake. The FA disciplinary panel have decided that he got the other major decision wrong, the penalty that won the game for Walsall, by overturning his decision to send off Michael Johnson.

He’ll always be remembered at Burnley as the referee who sent off Craig Hignett and made him walk almost the full length of the pitch but he has been back since and was referee when Delroy Facey hit three in our 3-1 victory over Walsall earlier in the season.

Jones is about average this season with a total of 95 yellow cards and 7 red cards from 30 games. The yellow cards have gone to 43 home team players and 52 away team players whilst the red cards are 3 home, including the incorrect dismissal of Johnson, and 4 away.

Tomorrow he will be assisted by Kevin Barnes (Wiltshire) and Mark Weaver (West Midlands).
