Jones gets Reading game again

Last updated : 05 March 2006 By Tony Scholes

It was unheard of a few years ago but not so much now that a referee gets the same fixture in successive seasons although it was only eight weeks ago that Jones refereed us, that was in our FA Cup defeat at Derby.

The 38 year-old from Chester was promoted to the League list ten years ago, then one of the youngest of officials, and has refereed Burnley on a number of occasions. Early last season he sent off Michael Duff in the 2-2 draw against Stoke and has had his moments in some of the other games.

No matter how often he referees Burnley though, the one incident we’ll always remember is the sending off of Craig Hignett when he was on loan at Coventry. If our 100 Great Moments was done now, then that surely would be a contender for a place.

This season he is as close as possible to averaging three yellow cards per game with 95 in 32 games and has also handed out five red cards. Of those yellow cards, 46 of them have gone to home team players and 49 to away team players.

The most recent of his red cards came just over two weeks ago in the vital Championship clash between Leeds and Watford when he sent off both Ben Foster and Darius Henderson. The sending off of goalkeeper Foster looked very harsh although there could be no questions asked about the Henderson dismissal.

He can, at times, be a very nit picking type of referee, he’s not one for letting the game flow, although if he can produce another magical moment like the Hignett dismissal I don’t think we’ll mind too much.

He will be assisted tomorrow by Bob Roberts and Jeremy Simpson (both Lancashire) and fourth official duties will be carried out by Richard Holdsworth (Yorkshire).
