Jones gets cup tie

Last updated : 06 January 2006 By Tony Scholes

Last season he was named as fourth official for our tie against Liverpool and this was one of two visits to Turf Moor early in 2005 as he took charge of our first home league game against Reading, a game that ended in a goalless draw.

He’s no stranger to Burnley games and more than once he’s turned in controversial performances. Early in Stan Ternent’s time as Burnley manager he awarded an amazing stoppage time penalty against Ronnie Jepson at Chesterfield that cost us the game, and last season he sent off Michael Duff in the home draw against Stoke.

Perhaps though he’ll be best remembered by Burnley fans for giving us one of the best moments on the Turf when he sent off Blackburn’s Craig Hignett, then on loan to Coventry, for gesturing at his assistant, leaving Hignett to walk two thirds the length of the pitch whilst receiving, shall we say, some comments from the stands.

Jones has always been considered something of a homer but this season he’s actually handed out more yellow cards to home players than away players. In 23 games he has handed out 75 yellow cards, 38 to home team players and 37 to away team players.

There have been three red cards too. The first of these was former Forest defender Jan-Olav Hjelde, now at Mansfield, who was dismissed in their 2-0 defeat at Rochdale. The other players he has sent off are Lincoln’s Dean Keates in a 1-1 home draw against Franchise and Andy Crosby of Scunthorpe in their televised 5-2 defeat at Blackpool.

Tomorrow he will be assisted by Steve Chittenden and Steve Tincknell (both Hertfordshire) whilst the fourth official duties will be carried out by Anthony Taylor (Greater Manchester).
