Jones for Fulham cup tie

Last updated : 23 September 2008 By Tony Scholes
He wasn't scheduled to referee that game and was brought in as a late replacement for the unavailable Lee Mason, and having had to suffer Mason three weeks later we didn't realise at the time just how big an escape that had been.

Jones, based in Chester, has been a regular visitor at Turf Moor over the years and he's certainly had his moments. Although he sent off Michael Duff against Stoke in the 2004/05 season it is probably his two other Turf Moor red cards that will be recalled more easily.

Two seasons ago he sent off West Brom's Paul McShane for an elbow that turned out to be a clash of heads with James O'Connor, but back in the 2002/03 season he gave the home crowd a real treat with the red card for Craig Hignett, then on loan to Coventry.

He likes his cards, and he racked up over 130 yellows last season whilst taking his red cards into double figures. This season he's had a quieter start as his career has hit new heights with his first ever game in the Premier League, Wigan's 5-0 win at Hull.

In five games to date this season he's handed out nine yellow cards. Five of them have gone to home team players with the other three to away team players. He's also used his red card, sending off Carlisle's Scott Dobie in their 0-0 draw at Leyton Orient.

Yes, he's had his moments, here's hoping for a quiet evening tonight from him. And let's face it, there's no sign of either Attwell nor his hapless assistant Bannister.

He will be assisted by Andrew Butler (Lancashire) and John Stokes (Wirral) whilst Football League referee Graham Salisbury (Lancashire) will be fourth official.
