Joe Royle in at Ipswich

The news of the appointment came as no surprise with Royle having already told the world that he had got the job leaving the press conference as nothing else other than a rubber stamping.

Out of work since May last year Royle has been desperate to get back into management and has been putting himself forward for just about every job that has become vacant. It has become almost embarrassing to hear of Royle's interest whether it has been a Premiership club or a lower league club with him always saying the same things about the club having great potential.

Last Tuesday when we were down in Suffolk the talk amongs the fans seemed to suggest that the job would go to one of two leading candidate, caretaker Tony Mowbray or Peter Reid recently sacked at Sunderland. There was no real enthusiasm for Royle.

He had a hugely successful time as Oldham manager and things certainly went worse after he left Everton. His time at City was one of relegations and promotions and in the end he left them where he found them, in Division One. It was a shock though when he was sacked.

Although Mowbray will be kept on Royle has already made a move for his trusted right hand man, former Claret Willie Donachie, who is now assistant to Terry Yorath at Sheffield Wednesday. Ipswich have already made a formal approach to the south Yorkshire club and Donachie is expected to join him.

There is certainly great potential at Ipswich and they looked impressive in last week's game against us when the draw was a fair result.
