Jay to stay with the Clarets

Jay Rodriguez
Burnley born Jay ended his apprenticeship last summer and signed a one year deal offered to him by then manager Steve Cotterill. He was included in the first team squad in pre-season and came on and scored a penalty in the friendly at Wrexham before joining the rest of the squad in Austria.

He made his competitive debut for the Clarets in December, coming on as a substitute for Stephen Jordan. That's his only first team action for us but since January he's been playing his football in Scotland with Stirling Albion. Despite suffering with a chest problem he's still played ten games for Stirling and scored two goals, those goals coming against Morton and Livingston.

It was expected he would get a new deal and manager Owen Coyle has today insisted this signing is part of a plan to get a younge squad with more power and pace. "I want to keep Jay Rodriguez," he said. "I think he has an opportunity and I have already been speaking to his agent and will look to get that resolved.

"The reason he went to Stirling is we knew he would get regular games. He missed six weeks with a chest problem but he has still done well and he looks as if he is improving on a regular basis. The summer is important to him now because I would expect him to come back bigger and stronger and hopefully ready to show that he has a part to play at this football club."
