Jay went down just past the hour in last night's reserve team game against Hull City, landing awkwardly after going up for a header and today's news, following a scan, is the worst news possible.

Owen Coyle said: "We are devastated for the lad and our primary concern is for him. He's obviously an integral part of our first team squad and it's another blow to lose him for three months on the back of the other injuries we have had.

"However, I know Jay will get the best possible care under our team of physios and we look forward to him coming back as soon as possible to play a part in the remainder of our season."

Jay is still to win a place in a match day squad in the Premier League and will now have to wait until the New Year as he joins Chris McCann, Martin Paterson and Chris Lynch on the long term injury list.
