It's Villa at the Turf

David O'Leary - will be bringing Aston Villa to Burnley
We have to go back some time for the last meeting between the two clubs, that came in the old First Division in 1975/76 but we have twice met in the League Cup with Villa winning on both occasions.

The last time was in 1970/71 when 1st Division Burnley travelled to Villa Park to play 3rd Division Villa, who at the time included former Claret Andy Lochhead. We came unstuck and went out 3-0 to the side from two divisions below us after a poor performance.

Ten years before that, in the inaugural season of the competition we met in the semi-final and that went to three matches. It was 1-1 at the Turf in the 1st leg and that was followed with a 2-2 draw in the second leg at Villa.

That forced a replay which was played at Old Trafford and the Clarets went out 2-1 in front of a crowd of less than 8,000. Villa went on to win the competition with a 3-2 aggregate win against Rotherham in the final.

The tie will be played in week commencing 25th October.
