We have to go back some time for the last meeting between the two clubs, that came in the old First Division in 1975/76 but we have twice met in the League Cup with Villa winning on both occasions.
The last time was in 1970/71 when 1st Division Burnley travelled to Villa Park to play 3rd Division Villa, who at the time included former Claret Andy Lochhead. We came unstuck and went out 3-0 to the side from two divisions below us after a poor performance.
Ten years before that, in the inaugural season of the competition we met in the semi-final and that went to three matches. It was 1-1 at the Turf in the 1st leg and that was followed with a 2-2 draw in the second leg at Villa.
That forced a replay which was played at Old Trafford and the Clarets went out 2-1 in front of a crowd of less than 8,000. Villa went on to win the competition with a 3-2 aggregate win against
