It's Jones again

Last updated : 28 January 2005 By Tony Scholes

Michael Duff is doubtful for tomorrow but he will very much remember the last time Jones was referee at the Turf, he sent him off for two bookable offences with the Clarets in front against Stoke and we ended the game with just a point.

It was a poor performance from Jones but not the first one in Burnley matches although he will always be remembered fondly for the sending off of Craig Hignett just over two years ago, one of those fantastic moments that would surely make the 100 Great Moments if it were being done now.

Recently he turned the tables on Stoke and sent off two of their players in a 1-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest but the only other player to get a red card from him this season was Franchise’s Harry Ntimban-Zeh as they were hammered by Cardiff in the Carling Cup in front of just over 2,000 spectators.

To add to that total of four red cards Jones has handed out a total of 50 yellow cards this season in 20 games. He has always been considered to be something of a homer, except when at Turf Moor, and even with a recent rush of yellow cards to home players the balance is still just 18 to home players and 32 to away players.

There often seems to be a controversial incident goes against us when he referees a Burnley game but there was Hignett and he did witness a Tony Grant goal that day so things aren’t always bad.

He will be assisted tomorrow by Ian Faulkner (Merseyside) and David Foster (Tyne & Wear). Foster was also one of the assistants for that Stoke game back in September.
