It's Grimsby in the Carling Cup

Having had home ties in the past two seasons against Carlisle and Hartlepool (both of whom were subsequently promoted) we are now back on the road with a visit to Blundell Park, hardly a favourite ground for Burnley fans.

Having said that, we drew there on our last visit which was an FA Cup tie and went on to win the replay and reach the 6th round and last time we played them in the League Cup was in the 1968/69 season. Again that was a draw before we won the replay 6-0 at Burnley in a season when we got as far as the semi-final.

Andy Lochhead scored our goal in the 1-1 draw in what has been our only previous League Cup tie against them, and Lochhead netted twice in the replay as did Frank Casper. Dave Thomas and John Murray got the other goals.

It gave us a 2nd round tie at Workington and also got us a new player. Doug Collins was so impressive for Grimsby that it persuaded the Clarets to part with £30,000 to bring him to Turf Moor. Just over two weeks after the games he was making his Burnley debut.
