It wasn't Clattenburg's last Turf Moor visit, that came on the opening day of last season when he turned in a somewhat disappointing performance as we beat QPR 2-0. He remains one of our top officials although last season, like Mike Dean, he went somewhat card crazy and handed out no fewer than 166 yellow cards in just 42 games.
He wasn't quite so busy with the red cards. There were just three, and two of them came in Cardiff's 1-0 win over Leeds, the home side winning despite ending the game with nine men.
This season all of his five games have been in the Premier League. He got off to a quiet start with no cards in the game between Everton and Wigan but has given out sixteen yellow cards in the four games since. Ten of those cards have gone to home players and just six to away players.
He's still rated one of our top referees and has already taken charge of both the Manchester and North London derby games this season. We'd be more than happy with another performance similar to the one we got from him in the Liverpool game.
He will be assisted tonight by Trevor Massey (Cheshire) and Jeremy Simpson (Lancashire). The fourth official is Tony Bates from Stoke-on-Trent. He refereed our league game at Scunthorpe last month and received a rating of 83.80 in our new Rate the Ref feature on the message board.
