QPR couldn't answer Stuart Gray's questions |
The two clubs in fourth and fifth place, the two who, should they win their games in hand, would be closest to us, were both in action tonight and the results have gone better than we could have ever dared hope.
QPR travelled to Hillsborough to face Sheffield Wednesday and went down to a 3-0 defeat and played over half of the game with ten men after Richard Dunne was sent off.
He went after giving a penalty away on 35 minutes which was converted by Chris Maguire and in the second half there were further goals from Leon Best (and how often does a Blackburn player do us a favour?) and Lewis Buxton.
Ahead of the game, Wednesday boss Stuart Gray, who spent a season and a half as first team coach at Turf Moor, said: "You look at the quality that Harry has to choose from. Yes, we respect them but we won't be frightened. We'll be in their faces, closing them down, asking questions of them."
They couldn't answer those questions against a Wednesday side who have now moved up to 14th in the table , a remarkable turn round in fortunes since Gray took over.
Over at the Concrete Jungle in Wigan it was a much closer affair. Wigan have been on an outstanding run recently and went into the game having won their last six league games during which they've scored 15 goals.
At home against Yeovil a seventh win was expected. It took them some time but Nick Powell gave them the lead on 56 minutes and it remained 1-0 until eight minutes from the end. Then we got an amazing five goals in around twelve minutes.
Ishmael Miller turned the game on its head scoring twice for Yeovil to take them 2-1 up only to see goals from James McArthur and a Byron Webster own goal restore Wigan's lead. Then, when I'd just about given it up, Luke Ayling equalised for Yeovil in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
In the other game, Charlton, our opponents on Saturday, scored a late goal to beat Bournemouth and move out of the bottom three, dumping their neighbours Millwall in the relegation positions.
But it was Burnley's night. We now lead both Derby and QPR by ten points with ten games remaining and sit a further four points ahead of Wigan who have a game in hand.
There are going to be some very nervous moments for us before the season ends. More grey hairs for some I guess, but that's no longer a problem for me. Nights like this certainly help.
