Had we had a sudden deluge of rain or had the fog descended at the last minute? Neither he called it off because part of the pitch was hard and unsafe. It must have all been OK five minutes before kick off.
His last Burnley game was early last season in our 2-1 home win against Stoke. He upset visiting manager Steve Cotterill by sending off loan player Tommy Mooney on the say so of the fourth official. Cotterill and Stoke appealed against the red card but got nowhere.
His first game this season was Preston’s Carling Cup tie at Deepdale against Notts County at Deepdale but after that he was out of the game until December, presumably with injury. He’s been busy since and has now taken charge of a total of fifteen games this season.
Pugh has always come across as a very officious type of referee, one that likes to be noticed and not a referee to allow the game to flow. Having said that he isn’t the most card happy of referees and the figures again reflect that.
In those 15 games this season there have been a total of 45 yellow cards (3 per game is becoming just about average) and only a couple of red cards.
A late run of home bookings has made his figures look somewhat closer in terms of home versus away but is still heavily weighted against away team players with only 17 to home players and 28 to away players.
Both players to see his red cards have been away players with one familiar face to Clarets fans. Peterborough’s Matthew Gill went off in their 1-0 defeat at Hartlepool whilst just a couple of weeks ago as we were beating Ipswich he sent off York’s player/boss Chris Brass in their 2-0 defeat at Boston.
He has a couple of Bobs assisting him tomorrow – Bob Lockhart (Tyne & Wear) and Bob Pollock (Merseyside).
