Is Waddle back in football?

With Clive Middlemass at Gawthorpe on his first day as Burnley boss
But that looks all set to change this afternoon with suggestions that 2nd Division Chesterfield are set to appoint the former Burnley boss as their new manager following the recent resignation of Dave Rushbury.

Chesterfield only ensured 2nd Division status last weekend when they drew against Blackpool at the half a ground at Bloomfield Road although with Cheltenham losing the result in the end didn’t matter.

Waddle threw his cap into the ring almost immediately just as he did in 1997 when the Burnley job was declared vacant after the dwarf did a runner to Everton. Most Burnley fans were delighted at the time but things didn’t quite work out as planned as he and The Sinister One took us from one disaster to another with our escape coming on the last day of the season.

Mystery surrounded his departure with neither him nor the club commenting but more recently Waddle admitted that he walked because he said it was impossible for him to work with the then Chairman Frank Teasdale.

In recent times I have heard Chris Brass, Jamie Hoyland and Glen Little all speak highly of him and we will never know how he would have fared given another season. I think it is fair to say that most of us were relieved that we weren’t given that opportunity.

We will know by this afternoon whether he is back in football or whether he is still looking round for the right job.
