Irons in the fire

Dundee's Kevin McDonald - one of the irons n the fire
It has become a long list of names including such as Kevin McDonald, Andrew Driver, Kaspars Gorkss, Stephen Crainey, Derek Riordan, Martin Paterson and Darel Russell with the club confirming that offers have been made for some of them.

Yet what is frustrating for supporters is that as yet not one of them has put pen to paper, but operational director Brendan Flood says that's nothing to worry about. "It's always quite at this time of year and then there's a rush," he said.

"You have to be proactive and double up on the targets you are after because at least then you have other options. Owen is after six or seven players and will try and get them of the best possible quality he can. He doesn't want to compromise on his objectives at the moment and has a very clear list of what he wants. We just have to hope we can grind them down.

"If we are going to get up we have to get a young pacy strong team. I think that's why both Hull and Bristol City did well last season. We have to get a spine of a team like that which is definitely what Owen is after."

Manager Coyle is on holiday right now but that doesn't mean he's not working to bring players into the club and Flood continued: "The manager is certainly not dormant on his holidays and is working away. A lot of the clubs want to see who else bids on certain players and see if they can get more money out of other people.

"We might not yet put our best foot forward on one or two players because we know that's going to happen. We want to make sure we have registered our interest though so people know we are there and then they will come back to us. We will probably put our best foot forward for players at the end of June or early July and make decisions then.

"I think it is exciting there are people who want to come to Burnley but we want to get our best players. Owen doesn't want to make decisions necessarily that will keep newspapers selling. We are better making the right decision for the team and he is being very selective."

Flood concluded: "I do think you will probably see a few new signings during the space of a week. It could well be like that because there are legs running around that you can't see at the moment. I think we are all hopeful but we don't want to raise expectations."

The wait goes on, the list gets longer, and despite Owen Coyle saying he was bringing in a new goalkeeper there has still not been a keeper linked with us. Perhaps we'll get a surprise and that will be the first signing.
