Ipswich would like McGreal

They appeared to be nothing more than speculation but yesterday the new Ipswich boss Jim Magilton confirmed that he would like McGreal and that he had made an enquiry as to taking the defender back to Portman Road on loan.

This week he has strengthened the Ipswich squad with two loan signings, Mark Noble and Simon Walton from West Ham and Charlton respectively, but has admitted that he would still like McGreal and is waiting for a response from Burnley.

The thoughts down in Suffolk are that he will be unsuccessful and that despite him having been an unused substitute in all three league games Johnny Mac is still very much in Steve Cotterill's plans.

It was just over two years ago that we signed him from Ipswich, Cotterill's first Burnley signing and one that upset then Ipswich boss Joe Royle who, whilst out in Portugal for Euro 2006, knew nothing about the deal.

McGreal had an outstanding first season and claimed a number of player of the year awards and was again in good form last season although lost his place at the end of the season, initially through injury. Now 34, and in the last season of a three year contract, it looks as though for now he'll be remaining at Turf Moor.
