Ings leaves Clarets for Liverpool

We've known really since last summer that 2014/15 would be his last at Turf Moor when he made it clear that he wouldn't be signing a new contract and that he would be running down the last year of the four year deal he signed when he joined us in August 2011 at the age of 19.

He'd kicked off the 2011/12 season at Bournemouth but suffered a knee injury in his first week at Burnley which kept him out until early 2012. Another knee injury in pre-season ruled him out of the first two months of the next season and when he recovered he was in and out of the side, playing in a variety of positions.

There were glimpses of his talent. I recall likening him to Robbie Blake when he scored in a 2-2 draw at Birmingham just before Christmas 2012 but it was in 2013/14, with a regular place that we finally saw the Danny Ings who has attracted interest from so many clubs.

It's easy to say he scored 21 Championship goals in our promotion season, including the winner at Ewood Park. That just wouldn't do him justice. His season wasn't just about scoring goals. His link up with Sam Vokes was crucial to it all and he turned in several simply outstanding performances.

He's added another eleven goals this season. Again he's played really well but the whole contract issue has hung over the club all season. That's not Danny's fault but the constant discussions and questions about it got a little tiresome at times.

I'm so pleased he went out with the winning goal at Villa just over two weeks ago. He deserved that, indeed he's scored all four of our winning goals on the road this season. He's proved to be an excellent signing for us and I think he'll be just that for Liverpool too once he's settled at his new club.

He hasn't left us completely; there's still his disability sports charity that he'll continue to run in Burnley, so his name will continue around these parts for a long time to come.

He'll join Liverpool on 1st July once his contract at Burnley is done and becomes the first player to transfer between the two clubs since goalkeeper Jim Furnell moved from Burnley to Liverpool in 1962; then it was a player having to move to a lesser club to get a game.

Liverpool have made an offer for him which we have turned down. The clubs will now have dialogue which will hopefully mean it won't have to be a tribunal who decides the fee.

Burnley FC have thanked him for his contribution and wished him well. There is no reason not to do so. He's been a credit to our club for the last four years; his goals helped us to win another year in the Premier League and he's given us some outstanding performances along the way.

He made 122 league appearances for us, of which 99 were starts, and scored 38 goals. Only 26 players have scored more post-war league goals for the Clarets.

We'll all have our favourites. Mine was his goal against QPR on the Turf last season that gave us the lead.

Best of luck Danny; it's been a pleasure watching you in the time you've been a Claret.
