Ings goal at Derby walks the monthly award

Last updated : 07 September 2013 By Tony Scholes

That was because Danny Ings' fifth and last goal of the month, our opener at Pride Park last Saturday in the 3-0 win against Derby, was, by some margin, the one voted the best.

It won 79.9% of the vote, a massive return given the number of goals to select from, and that left so few votes for the remaining goals that only one other, Keith Treacy's opener against Yeovil, got past 5%.

The winning goal, which looks better every time I see it, came when Dean Marney played the ball forward from the edge of our box as far as Treacy who flicked it on for Ings just our side of the half way line.

It was a brilliant flick but Ings still had a lot to do and do it he did. He moved forward with the ball before brushing past the last defender on the edge of the box, a defender who now claims he should have done better by fouling Ings, before slotting the ball across and past former Burnley goalkeeper Lee Grant.

I think it might take some beating for the Goal of the Season vote next May and is the first goal guaranteed a place in that vote.

So Ings wins the goal of the month and Jason Shackell, also on the scoresheet against his old club Derby, is the Player of the Month after accruing a total of 39 points during August from the man of the match votes and player ratings.

Well done to both of them, in fact the entire team after an August that has given us an excellent start to the season with 10 points from 5 league games and a place in the third round of the Capital One Cup.
