In the Championship – Warnock loses it

Adam Bolder - outrageous 'challenge'
The weekend got underway at Bramall Lane as Derby collected their twelfth away win of the season with a 1-0 success over Sheffield United courtesy of a goal from Morten Bisgaard. But the incident that overshadowed everything was one that the FA must take a look at and take some retrospective action.

Adam Bolder’s challenge, and I use the word challenge very loosely indeed, on Chris Morgan was outrageous; he went over the ball and could so easily have broken Morgan’s leg. A three match ban is the least he should expect.

Also in the dock should be the incompetent Chris Foy, he didn’t miss the incident; he clearly saw it from the best view possible and shook his head to indicate he didn’t think it was a foul. Mr Foy should be suspended and some very stringent checks should be made to determine whether he really is up to refereeing.

It all led to Blades’ boss Neil Warnock completely losing it after the match ranting on, he must have been delighted to have something to whinge about rather than have to take any criticism over his side’s poor performance.

Over at Reading, where Forest all but lost their fight for safety, another referee came into the spotlight. This was the most incredible decisions as Steve Tanner sent off Forest keeper Paul Gerrard for handling the ball outside the area.

Now I’ve seen this incident in slow motion several times and I don’t think he did, neither did the assistant referee from the time but Tanner, yards down the pitch and in no place to see, awarded the free kick and sent him off.

Three minutes later and ten man Forest conceded the only goal of the game to James Harper in a game where they had never looked like conceding a goal.

That takes us to Leicester and referee Stroud will be the only person who could possibly know why Danny Tiatto wasn’t sent off after two ugly incidents within the space of just a few minutes. It did Tiatto no good at all though, his side were beaten 2-0 by Wigan.

Brett Ormerod - two goals for Wigan
Both goals were scored by loan striker Brett Ormerod and both came from dead ball kicks from Graham Kavanagh who they got on the cheap recently from Cardiff.

Bolder, Tiatto, Foy, Tanner and Stroud – not one of them did the game any favours on Saturday, but I suppose it is refreshing sometimes to know that it is not just the Clarets who get the crap referees.

The big match over the weekend came yesterday and it was no disappointment as Ipswich and Sunderland fought out a 2-2 draw in a match that the Mackems really should have won, they were without doubt the better side.

They looked head and shoulders better than the side that beat us in March but having missed a penalty by Marcus Stewart, playing against his old club, in the first half they found themselves a goal down when keeper Michael Ingham failed to hold a cross and Richard Naylor scored.

Sunderland came storming back though to take the lead with goals from Stephen Elliott and Carl Robinson before Ipswich earned themselves a vital point with a goal in the last minute of normal time.

Preston just can’t go wrong at the moment, when we beat them in December they were sixteenth in the table. But one defeat since has left them almost certain to win a play off spot although they left it late on Saturday before recording the biggest win of the day.

Struggling crisis club Cardiff held them for 67 minutes before Dave Nugent gave the home side the lead with a cracking strike from outside the box. He added a second before Richard Cresswell made it three with five minutes to go.

The defeat leaves Cardiff outside the bottom three only on goal difference and ahead of Brighton whilst Gillingham and Crewe sit just above them having got a point each on Saturday in a 1-1 draw at Priestfield.

Crewe’s long run without a win continued despite them taking the lead through David Vaughan as Nicky Southall scored his first goal since March 2003.

Gary McSheffrey - scored Coventry's first from the penalty spot
Coventry earned themselves a point, but that was no surprise given that they were playing draw specialists Wolves who drew for the twenty first time this season. Wolves were twice in the lead through Leon Clarke and Lee Naylor but Coventry came back twice, firstly with a Gary McSheffrey penalty and then a stoppage time goal from Stern John.

A scrappy Heidar Helguson goal was enough to give Boothroyd’s Watford their first points over a Rotherham side that now look to have given up completely. It’s good to hear that Boothroyd’s side are still looking up but they are still going to have to get points in home games against Sheffield United and West Ham.

West Ham really needed a win in their friendly local derby against Millwall but fell behind early in the game to a goal from Barry Hayles. Marlon Harewood brought them level ten minutes before half time but the draw might just not be good enough to get them a place in the top six.

Any worries Plymouth had are surely over now but they couldn’t pull themselves completely clear at Stoke and went down 2-0 with Kenwyne Jones and Darel Russell getting the goals from the home side.

Finally there was no place in the sixteen for Ian Moore as Leeds travelled to QPR and went in front through fit again Seth Johnson. A late equaliser from Kevin Gallen gave both sides a point each.

There are three games on Tuesday before a full fixture list next weekend, the fixtures are shown below the weekend stats.
