In the Championship – Kinnear hits out at Warnock

Last updated : 21 October 2004 By Tony Scholes

Joe Kinnear - less than kind words for Neil Warnock
I’m sure a former Burnley manager would have been loving watching it on the magic lantern as Kinnear laid into the Blades’ boss and judging from the way Warnock was reacting in the dug out he certainly had a case.

He accused him of intimidating the officials and then warned they would be waiting for him later in the season when Sheffield United visit the City Ground.

Both managers were also concerned at attacking Preston referee Graham Salisbury who had something of a nightmare including two of the most incredible of decisions. He firstly sent off Sheffield United’s Alan Quinn when he appeared to be the victim of an awful challenge from Forest’s Michael Dawson.

Then right at the end he yellow carded Forest’s Kris Commons for diving inside the home box rather than give the penalty. The incident left Commons requiring stitches.

It all ended 1-1 with David Johnson tapping in a late equaliser to cancel out Andy Liddell’s first goal for Sheffield United.

Bramall Lane
wasn’t the only place for controversy. All hell broke loose at Deepdale with a brawl on the pitch right in front of the dug outs. It was reported that it awakened some people for the first time since the departure of the Weary Whinger.

It all kicked off when Eddie Lewis reacted to a foul by Lee Cook but flood warden Andy Hall, he had a busy night with the book, needless to say missed the main event and took no action against Lewis.

The game did see an end to QPR’s remarkable run of seven successive wins that saw them climb from 20th to 3rd in the table.

Still up there at the top are Wigan and they are really packing them in at the JJB right now, an amazing seen and a half thousand turned up to see the latest win, 4-1 against Crewe. Jason Roberts bagged a couple on Saturday, this time it was the turn of Nathan Ellington.

Nathan Ellington - two goals in Wigan's win against Crewe
The Latics remain unbeaten and now have the two leading scorers in the division; I would suspect they are going to take some stopping as they continue to play in front of empty seats.

Reading remain in second place but had to come from behind at the Madejski to earn a point against Leeds. The visitors went in front in the very first minute through Simon Walton but Lloyd Owusu brought the home side level right on half time to complete the scoring.

Ipswich yet again benefited from a late own goal. They trailed 2-1 at Leicester, the club with the dynamic management team of Dave Bassett and Howard Wilkinson, with just a minute to go.

Then Matt Heath, who had scored at the other end earlier in the game, put through his own goal to take it to 2-2. Long Ball Joe must have been delighted to be able to play someone who were so keen to give goals away.

West Ham had a comfortable win against Stoke and probably scored the goal of the week, their second from Teddy Sheringham. It ended 2-0 and this was Stoke’s 3rd defeat in a row and they have now gone six games without a win.

They were league leaders when they came to the Turf, they now sit in 10th place just two places and two points above the Clarets. It can’t come as too much of a surprise, and I would think many will be delighted to see them on the slide.

Down at the bottom things are no better for Rotherham, they lost again and they failed to score again whilst manager Ronnie Moore has just about signed his own death warrant, claiming that if they don’t get a striker they will go down with the lowest every points total.

The takeover at Millmoor completes on 1st November, it is looking as though Ronnie will be able to clear his desk by the 2nd. Although it has been denied there is no smoke without fire and it is obvious that the new owners want to bring in Paul Gascoigne (or is he G8 or just a symbol now?) as Moore’s replacement.

Andy Hessenthaler - is it him or John Gorman in charge at Gillingham?
Above them Gillingham, the club with two managers with the arrival of John Gorman officially as coach, lost again. This time it was a 2-1 defeat at Millwall. They have lost their last six games and have picked up just one point in eight games since they won on the Turf.

It is already beginning to look very difficult for the bottom two although I’m not so sure they will both fall as far away from the pack as BRBC and Franchise did last season.

Wolves climbed out of the bottom three by doing something they hadn’t previously done all season – they won at Molineux. Their record there was beginning to look as bad as ours but then we only have to play there once a season.

The victims were Derby who had goalkeeper Lee Camp sent off after sixteen minutes. Sub goalkeeper Lee Grant came on and his first job was to face a penalty. Now here’s something novel – Wolves actually scored from the spot kick with Kevin Cooper getting the job this time.

Cooper added a second early in the second half to give them a 2-0 win, their third win of the season.

Cardiff are back in the bottom three, I bet there is not too much complaining around the supporters in the division at that news. They earned themselves a point in a 1-1 draw at Brighton where Leon Knight gave the home side the lead before former York forward Lee Bullock equalised with nine minutes left.

In the remaining game Sunderland’s Stephen Elliott kept up his scoring form to equalise at Watford after Neal Ardley had given the home side the lead. Watford are another side sliding somewhat and this is now five games without a win.

There’s been little in the way of transfers in the last week but the two that did go through brought debuts on Tuesday.

QPR have brought in Arsenal’s Frankie Simek and the 20-year-old defender from Missouri, USA made his debut at Deepdale. There was also a debut for Michael Duberry who has joined Stoke on loan from Leeds – he played in the defeat at West Ham.

This weekend sees a full fixture list with the Clarets leading the way with the home game against Derby in front of the Sky cameras – yes that’s right, the Sky cameras are at the Turf for a league game.

So don’t forget – get your scarves out and sing up for the lads.
