In the Championship – Give it a rest Adams

Mick Adams - not happy with Norwich or Danny Coyne
Norwich City have reacted strongly to his accusations of them trying to unsettle James Scowcroft and not going through the proper channels to record their interest. The Canaries have refuted them strongly.

Then he has a go at Danny Coyne over his move to the Clarets, this after he agreed to continue for a couple of weeks to cover on their tour of Finland and Estonia.

Adams said of his move to Turf Moor, “If I'm honest I have to say I'm disappointed in Danny. We offered him a one-year contract when he came from Grimsby last summer but he said he wanted a two-year deal so we gave it to him. Now, after one year, he wants to go."

The Leicester boss added: "I wouldn't say he goes with my best wishes either because he gave me a problem I could well have done without this summer."

This supposed problem for a club with three other keepers was resolved with the signing of the former Sheffield Wednesday keeper Kevin Pressman. It was a wonderful piece of business as they pipped Accrington Stanley for his signature at the last minute.

Of course Adams’ club Leicester do everything above board don’t they? Has he forgotten their administration and debt wiping of 2002?

He’ll certainly be at it again this week if David Connolly chooses to join Sunderland. Mick McCarthy thinks he can persuade the West Ham striker to join him but Adams has already said that if he does leave West Ham it will be for the Walkers Stadium.

Pre-season is certainly well under way for all the clubs in the league with pre-season friendlies being played in a number of far flung places.

Already fourteen clubs in the division have been or currently are out of the country on tours with eleven of them choosing European destinations whilst Millwall are in Canada with Sunderland and Nottingham Forest in the United States.

Neil Wood - scored for Coventry in their abandoned game in Germany
It hasn’t been all plain sailing for these clubs though – a thunder storm force an abandonment of Sunderland’s game in Carolina as a Carolina Select XI led 2-1 whilst Coventry’s game against German side Gemunden was similarly stopped because of torrential rain, high winds and a thunder storm. Coventry led 3-0 with Neil Wood scoring one of the goals.

Thankfully Plymouth are reporting no problems from their Obertraun, Austria base, they will vacate this weekend as the Clarets move in.

Coventry brought in two new players this week to add to the squad. Peter Reid signed Bristol City defender Louis Carey and then captured Manchester United striker Eddie Johnson on a season long loan.

Dele Adebola is looking forward to the new season, under a new manager he is hoping to become a first team regular. Stan’s last Burnley signing must have recovered from the injuries that prevented him moving.

Former Burnley loan keeper Gavin Ward was released by the Sky Blues at the end of last season but re-signed for them last Tuesday on a month-to-month basis. He didn’t stop long though and by Friday he was off to join the Weary Whinger of Deepdale on a year long deal.

Now what about Preston. They had an unnamed expensive signing lined up to replace Ricardo Fuller but that’s all off now as the Jamaican comes back with a failed medical and almost certain to require more surgery.

Fuller turned up at Bamber Bridge to watch North End in action on Saturday and was promptly booed by his own supporters and that did not please WW who claimed that the player had only been showing some ambition to play at the top.

Preston now have an official band that will tour the country with them and they are looking for sponsors to pay for the instruments. Thankfully they will be turned away by the Turf Moor jobsworths when they get here.

Tim Cahill - still at Millwall for now
Millwall have hit the roof this week over the collapsed transfer of Tim Cahill to Crystal Palace and have claimed that the comments of Cahill’s agent beggars belief. According to Millwall the player has shown no interest in signing a new deal at the Den and has also spoken to both Villa and Everton.

There seems to be no future for Cahill there now and it looks like another case of an agent making life more difficult for his client. When will it register with some of these players?

Over at Leeds the latest to go is Danny Mills who has joined KKMC, from one club round the bend to another. Incredibly the Football League club are committed to continue paying a hefty portion of his wage whilst the Premiership club get him on the cheap.

Mr. Pompous Junior has suddenly walked out of Elland Road – he appeared to be running the show but has followed his dad out of the ground and who knows, out of football.

Two former Clarets have been in the news this week and it hasn’t been good news for either of them. The former King, Arthur Gnohere is still struggling to replace the fallen crown and has been issued with a written warning over his failure to turn up for training. He’s been handed squad number 22 by QPR which does not suggest he is going to be a first choice player this season.

Paul Shaw, with us on loan from Arsenal just over nine years ago, has been placed on the transfer list by Sheffield United only months after signing for them. “It hasn’t worked out,” said Neil Warnock. Shaw has been linked with returns to both Millwall and Gillingham.

Warnock has taken two players on trial in Paul Thirlwell who was released by Sunderland and former Franchise player Michael Gordon.

Teddy Sheringham - new West Ham signing
Teddy Sheringham has signed for West Ham, Wolves have captured Nigerian midfielder Seyi George Olofinjana from Brann Bergen and Jermaine Darlington has joined Watford.

Watford are the first trophy winners of the season - they lifted the Copa de Ibiza beating off tough competition from Sheffield Wednesday (losing finalists) and Preston. Not surprisingly the competition was played in Ibiza where some bloke wearing a knotted tartan handkerchief on his head was seen to put all the holidaymakers to sleep.

Brighton have lost Chris Iwelumo. The former Stoke player has turned down the new contract offer and moved to German club Alemannia Aachen. Manager Mark McGhee is currently trying to sign Hungarian Zsombor Kerekes as a replacement.

Ipswich are giving a trial to Lubimal Guentchev, son of former player Bontcho whilst Paul McLaren, released by Sheffield Wednesday, is training with Rotherham.

Rotherham are really hitting the big time and they played their first pre-season game yesterday against Whiston Parish Church. We don’t have the result but we believe the church team won the toss and elected to bat.

Gillingham have announced a new pricing structure for home games this season. They will have AAA matches, AA matches and A matches with different prices for each.

In the Brian Moore Stand (home section) the prices are £24 for AAA, £13 for AA and just £10 for A matches and under Football League rules these prices will have to be the same for visiting supporters.

Thankfully, along with just Crewe and Rotherham, we have been placed in the single A category and therefore the cheapest price.

Finally I cast an eye on the new Reading team picture, and yes Glen does still look strange in a blue and white hooped shirt. It does though show the changing face of football and included on the picture are two members of the coaching staff who would not have existed just a short time ago – the video technician and the sports scientist.

This time next week the Clarets will be in Austria playing two matches whilst doing a bit of white water rafting. The club’s Marketing and Communications Manager Edoardo Abis is going on the trip and has been seen working out (as best he can) at the Turf Moor leisure centre trying to prepare for such activities.
Clarets Mad have thankfully avoided such things but will be reporting from the two games over there.

We’ll be back in the Championship next week.
