In the Championship – Cardiff lead cut

Dave Nugent - second player to be sent off in the game at Deepdale
The Welsh side kicked off the weekend three points clear at the top but they were soon facing a difficult afternoon at Deepdale when top homer referee Eddie Ilderton reduced them to ten men, sending off Glenn Loovens with just ten minutes gone for a foul on Dave Nugent.

Harsh or not, and it was something and nothing, it left them one man short, but Ilderton evened it all up ten minutes before half time as he handed Nugent a second yellow card. At ten a side the game opened up and Preston went on to win it 2-1 with the winner coming from Danny Pugh midway through the second half.

There was a red card too at St. Andrew's but by the time referee Trevor Kettle dismissed Jon Parkin the game was all over with. Birmingham were two up just after half time but Hull, the only club without a win, pulled one back through David Livermore. There should have been no real surprise at the sending off, Kettle is the red card King of the Football League and this was his third already this season in just five games.

Wolves have joined them both on thirteen points after their third successive 1-0 win. They left it late this time with substitute Jay Bothroyd hitting a rocket into the top corner from outside the box in stoppage time. It had been an even game but Leeds' boss Kevin Blackwell thought his side should have run out easy winners and didn't only because his forwards are not currently hitting the net.

This is the same Kevin Blackwell who once again preferred fifteen goals a season Ian Moore, now without a goal in thirty-one league appearances for Leeds, to Robbie Blake who spent the entire ninety minutes on the bench. How much longer for Blackwell who seems to be getting his excuses ready with his comments about reducing the debt.

The biggest crowd of the day saw Derby take on the newly names Roy Keane's Sunderland at Pride Park. It was Derby who went in front right on half time when Matt Oakley, hitting home a knock down following a cross from former Claret Mo Camara.

Mo nearly went one better early in the second half with a free kick but he was at fault when RK Sunderland equalised. And two minutes later the visitors had won it. Interestingly both goals were celebrated with such antics as jumping in the crowd and/or removing shirts and yet referee Bates did nothing about it. Maybe he recalled Keane's actions when D'Urso upset him a few years ago at Old Trafford and didn't want a repetition.

Darren Kenton - put through his own goal against West Brom
I have to say I was delighted to see Darren Kenton get a goal over the weekend. Over the years I've witnessed so many of our players suffering serious injuries in challenges with this player I quite enjoyed his excellent headed own goal that gave West Brom the lead against Leicester.

A Kevin Phillips penalty, his first goal outside the Premiership since 1999, ensured a home victory for the visitors, and this was Leicester's first defeat since the Clarets beat them in the first midweek of the season.

Two south coast managers came up against their old clubs but neither of them had the best of days. Ian Holloway must have been desperate to get a win against QPR after the events of last season but saw former Plymouth loan player Dexter Blackstock give the London club an early lead. Holloway did at least get a draw in the end with a first Plymouth goal for the wonderfully named Sylvain Ebanks-Blake, their Cambridge born former Manchester United striker.

There was no such luck for George Burley who took his Southampton side to his former club Ipswich, saw them totally dominate the game and come away with nothing. They went in front after just three minutes with a Kenwyne Jones goal, hit the woodwork twice and had a shot cleared off the line. A Simon Walton penalty brought the home side back into it before Billy Clarke got his first ever goal to win it for the Tractor Boys. Jim Magilton admitted after the game that his side rode their luck.

It was like a Trinidad & Tobago international at the Ricoh Arena as Coventry run out easy 3-0 winners against Norwich City. Chris Birchall scored the first goal, the second was set up by Stern John and John then scored the third himself.

Norwich remain in the top six despite the defeat, and so do Palace who were beaten 2-1 at Luton. It could have been worse, they were two behind before James Scowcroft scored a stoppage time goal, with a header of course. The win might have taken Luton to seventh but manager Mike Newell said after the game that the club was going nowhere unless it could find some investment.

The remaining two games both ended in draws. Southend and Sheffield Wednesday couldn't manage a goal between them at Roots Hall but it was 2-2 at Oakwell between our two opponents this week, Barnsley and Stoke.

Stoke were two up midway through the first half with former Claret Luke Chadwick netting the second goal. That all changed in the second half with come back experts Barnsley scoring twice in three minutes to earn themselves a point.

This week we've got midweek games as well as a full fixture list at weekend. All the fixtures are shown below along with the weekend stats.
