In the Championship – Blades and Hatters win again

Dean Morgan - scored the late winner for Luton
We know all about Sheffield United’s win on Tuesday but Luton have made what can only be described as a sensational start with wins over two of the sides relegated from the Premiership at the end of last season.

They stunned everyone with their win at Palace on Saturday but on Tuesday night they recorded a second win, this time at home and against Southampton, and they came from behind to win it.

Twice they were behind but they fought back with goals from Kevin Nicholls and Ahmet Brkovic before Dean Morgan, a summer signing from Reading, scored the winner in stoppage time.

Palace, having lost to Luton on Saturday, were beaten again by the same 2-1 scoreline at much fancied Wolves. Again it was a late goal, Carl Cort netting the winner six minutes from time to give the Molineux side their first win of the season.

Thankfully Palace are not Brighton, otherwise it would be us bottom of the league on alphabetical order. As it is Palace are officially the one side below us right now.

There was something of a sensation at Leicester’s crisp bowl, Stoke not only scored, they scored twice. Three years ago Marlon Broomes looked set to be a Claret but he’s now at the Windy City and equalised for the Potters just after the hour.

That served only to awaken Leicester striker David Connolly who scored three goals in the last twenty-four minutes, the first hat-trick of the season, and Leicester went on to win it 4-2.

There was a familiar name on the scoresheet when Cardiff met Leeds at Ninian Park, that of Robbie Blake. He got his first league goal of the season to give Leeds a first half lead. It was to no avail though and Cardiff came back with two goals in seven second half minutes to win it.

Robbie Blake - scored his first league goal for Leeds
Those goals were scored by Jason Koumas and a Darren Purse penalty. It’s not so long ago that Cardiff had the PFA bailing them out and yet they can go into the game with seven new players in the side. They must be copying Leeds who just buy players whether they have any money or not.

Preston and Derby met in last year’s play offs and both are hoping to achieve at least the same this season. They took a point each from a 1-1 draw at Deepdale where Dave Nugent gave Preston the lead before an Inigo Idiakez penalty before half time brought it all level.

It’s Nugent’s second goal of the season and his tenth now for Preston in twenty league appearances since his transfer from Bury in January. Without doubt a cracking start for the 20 year-old striker.

Crewe are amongst the favourites to go down but they got themselves a good point at Norwich. The Canaries are still looking for their first win after successive home games and this time they had to come from behind after Luke Varney gave Crewe the lead.

It was hard on Norwich, Varney would not have been playing had referee Colin Webster carried out his duties correctly last Saturday, he would have been serving a suspension. Leon McKenzie got the equaliser for the home side in the second half.

It was no surprise to see Sheffield Wednesday pull in the biggest crowd so far this season but perhaps something of a surprise that it fell short of 30,000 albeit by less than a hundred. They were treated to a 1-1 draw in the Yorkshire derby against fellow promoted club Hull with Leon Best scoring first for Wednesday before Nicky Barmby equalised for Hull midway through the first half.

It was very much a bitter sweet night for the 18 year-old striker Best, playing his second game on loan from Southampton. He may have got his first goal but he also suffered a broken foot and has now returned to St. Mary’s. He is expected to be out for around two months.

Glen Little - scored Reading's first goal at Brighton
If it was no surprise to see the biggest crowd at Hillsborough then it certainly wasn’t to see the Withdean hosting the smallest crowd so far as Brighton fell to a 2-0 defeat against Reading in a game where both managers were facing former clubs.

Glen Little scored a rare goal to give Reading the lead, only his second for the club, and Dave Kitson added the second. Glen was on for an hour before being replaced by John Oster.

QPR beat Ipswich 2-1 but by all accounts the victory could have been by a wider margin. The home side were two up by half time with goals from Kevin Gallen and former Burnley target Martin Rowlands and looked set for a big win.

A Sam Parkin goal, his first for Ipswich, nine minutes into the second half put paid to that but QPR were still convincing winners.

That leaves two draws at Plymouth and Millwall. At Home Park Plymouth and Watford fought out a 3-3 draw. Plymouth were two up in twelve minutes and 3-1 in front at half time. But the upwardly looking Watford came back in the second half to earn a draw with two goals from Ashley Young.

There was no such excitement at the Den where Millwall and Coventry drew 0-0 in front of a crowd of just over 8,000. The busiest man on the pitch was referee Grant Hegley who handed out six yellow cards and one red, the player sent off was the Canadian long throw man Adrian Serioux.

Worryingly there have now been a total of 85 yellow cards in the Championship already this season – it looks as though the suspensions are going to be kicking in even earlier this year.

The weekend sees another full fixture list with Norwich set for their third home game and Coventry, at the Turf, their third away game.
