Ilderton returns to the Turf

Last updated : 16 December 2005 By Tony Scholes

A year ago he had a poor game on his first appearance at Turf Moor but this season he took charge of the Brighton game and it was refreshing to see a referee who seemed intent on allowing the players to play, and it is fair to say he was hardly noticed in the ninety minutes although Brighton were not too keen on the penalty he gave us.

That makes it two penalties in two games, when he was here last season for the Millwall game it was a penalty that won the game for the Clarets, a decision that was hotly disputed by Dennis Wise and his crew but one that was a clear spot kick for hand ball.

He certainly upset one Championship manager last week by awarding a penalty against his team. That was our old friend Billy Davies and I have to say the spot kick that earned Derby a point was somewhat harsh.

Four Preston players were yellow carded too and that is not Ilderton’s style, this is his fourth season on the league list and his average is around two per game, and that is not an average that has seen an increase this season with just 28 yellow and 2 red cards in 17 games.

Last week’s game at Derby has boosted his away bookings which sees 10 of those 28 yellow cards having been given to home players with the other 18 to away players. The two red cards came in the same game between Huddersfield and Brentford at the Galpharm.

A similar performance to the one earlier in the season would be just about right and another penalty will be fine too, and like last season giving us a win.

The assistant referees will be Richard Hewitt (Yorkshire) and Dave McCallum (Tyne & Wear) whilst fourth official duties will be carried out by Allan Rawcliffe (Greater Manchester).
