I thought the whole feel of the game was flat

Speaking after the game, he said: “I don’t think either side played awfully well and we were disappointed that we didn’t manage the ball well in the first half, but one of the things we haven’t done particularly well this season is win tight, scruffy games and I suppose we’ve done that today.

“In the second half we had a bit more control and created a few more opportunities, but it was about winning the game today. We’ve had tough spells where we’ve played well and things haven’t always gone our way and it’s probably affected the confidence of the players, but today was about getting three points, no matter how we did it. It’s good to finish the year on a decent note.”

The winning goal, predictably from Nugent, brought the following praise from his manager. “He’d be the first to admit that he prefers to play in a 4-4-2 and we have played that system for the most part, but today we wanted to get Anthony Knockaert into positions that would suit him.

“Things didn’t work out as we would have liked but, having said that, David Nugent worked particularly hard today and got his reward with scoring his goal. It was a good finish, but a scruffy game all in all.”

Sean Dyche was certainly not happy with our performance. "We could've nicked a point but I don't think we did enough to win the game," he said. "We didn't use the ball well enough or keep the ball well enough.

"We did create some chances to be fair and we did make a really good one right at the end, but with our performance levels I think a point is the best we could've expected.

"It was a really poor goal from our point of view and we've been really good defensively since I've been here. It was a really soft one.

"I thought both sides were flat in the first half, there was no energy or tempo and it was quite cagey. They controlled the ball and kept it slightly better than we did. I believe in the performance levels of the players and it wasn't there today. We were flat in the first half and I thought the whole feel of the game was flat.

"We conceded a soft goal, responded slightly but not with the urgency we've had lately. We weren't good enough. We believe we're building a good thing here, the mentality and belief of the players is changing, but I was a little bit disappointed that we didn't play with that manner, confidence and belief.

"Arguably with the chance at the end we could've nicked something from it but overall a draw was the best we deserved."
