Hyde joins Clarets

Hyde was released by Watford at the end of last season because it appeared at the time that he had received an offer from elsewhere that the Hornets couldn’t compete with. Manager Ray Lewington did say that he would be welcome back if things didn’t work out.

They didn’t and he has been training with Sheffield United but Cotterill has swooped to bring the player to Turf Moor on a three year deal.

Hyde is the second international to join the Clarets in the last few days following on from goalkeeper Danny Coyne, he made his debut for Jamaica in May 2001. He is London born of a Jamaican father and Trinidadian mother but chose to play his international football with the Reggae Boyz.

Watford paid Cambridge United £250,000 for him in 1997 and he has gone on to make over 250 league appearances for them with 35 of those coming in the Premiership. That was in the 1999/2000 season when he started all but four of Watford’s league games that season.

Ray Lewington admits that he is a player who can drive you crazy but cited the performances of Hyde and fellow midfielder Gavin Mahon as the catalyst that got them out of relegation trouble last spring.

Manager Steve Cotterill told the official web site, “He’s a terrific midfielder, great leader, good experience and a good age at 29. He’s a very good player and we are pleased to add him to our team.

“He’s a good character, very determined and he is a winner. It’s another piece in the jigsaw and the squad is starting to shape up a bit more now.”

Hyde, who will wear 17, is expected to make his debut along with Danny Coyne in the friendly against Everton on Thursday.
