Hull of a win at Wembley

We'd already said our farewells to champions West Brom and runners up Stoke and it was Hull who went on to take that third promotion place after a 1-0 win over Bristol City courtesy of a brilliant goal from 39-year-old striker Dean Windass who many years ago was partnering Andy Payton in the Hull attack.

No longer is Hull the largest city in Europe never to have had a team in its country's top flight. I'm not sure who takes that title now but it won't bother Phil Brown's team when they kick off again in August.

West Brom are the only one of the three promoted clubs to have been up there before. This has been their third promotion and whilst Hull will be sampling top flight football for the first time Stoke are returning after 23 years.

Life will be difficult for them and that's shown by the three teams who are replacing them in the Championship. Two of them, Birmingham and Derby, are coming straight back down after winning promotion last season and the third relegated club are Reading who lasted just two years. That suggest it is more than likely that at least one of them will be facing the drop this time next year.

There's just one Championship place up for grabs now and that will go to the winners of tomorrow's League One play off final at Wembley. I wonder how many neutrals are supporting Doncaster.
