Huddersfield keen on ex-Claret Jepson

The names of Kevin Blackwell, Andy Ritchie and Stan Ternent were the first mentioned after Jackson's departure but this morning Gillingham Chairman Paul Scally has confirmed that Huddersfield have made an approach.

Scally said: "Huddersfield called yesterday to ask if their Chairman could talk to me, and of course I said yes. Ronnie was always going to be linked because he's a bit of a legend after his time as a player there."

That's something of an understatement from Scally, Jepson is more than a bit of a legend at Huddersfield. He signed for them in December 1993 in an £80,000 transfer from Exeter and was there for two and a half years before joining Stan Ternent at Bury.

In the first of his two full seasons at Huddersfield, their first in the new McAlpine Stadium, Jepson scored nineteen times as they reached the play offs, beating Bristol Rovers at Wembley to go up.

In 2000, he played there for the Clarets, coming on as a substitute and replacing another former Huddersfield player Andy Payton. There was no doubting his popularity as he received a superb ovation from the home crowd as he came on.

Jepson has been manager at Gillingham since replacing Neale Cooper in November 2005, Scally has given no indication as to whether permission was given to Huddersfield to speak to him.
