Despite the excellent FA Cup run they had a torrid time in the league and just like the Clarets the form after the cup knock out at Wolves proved to be disastrous with only 16 points from 18 games.
They ended the season just four points clear of relegated Exeter and Simpson walked rather than wait to be pushed and Alan Buckley was appointed as his replacement.
Things looked less than promising for Jamie Hoyland earlier this week when Buckley took Tony Ford back to Spotland as his assistant and yesterday the axe finally fell on the former Claret.
There’ll be no unfair dismissal claim this time though with Hoyland and the club having negotiated and agreed a final pay off.
