Hessenthaler goes at Gillingham, sort of

Hessenthaler has been winding people up as player and manager at Gillingham for nine years, and for over four years as manager as well, but he has decided himself to step down because he feels he has taken them as far as he can.

That delightful man Paul Scally has accepted his resignation and immediately placed John Gorman (he’s Glenn Hoddle’s assistant and not his medium) in temporary charge whilst offering Hessenthaler a place on the board.

The 39-year-old signed for the Gills on the eve of the 1996/97 season in a £235,000 move from Watford and was quickly into winding up the Clarets when we made an early visit to the Priestfield that season. He’s now played well over 300 games for them.

He took over as manager when legend in his own mind Peter Taylor decided to move on to make a mess of Leicester after they had been promoted in 2000 through the play offs after the Clarets beat them to automatic promotion on the last day of the season.

They were tipped for automatic relegation yet he has kept Gillingham in this division for a fifth successive season although things are not good at the moment.

He will continue to play and will be available for John Gorman when they take on fellow strugglers Nottingham Forest at home this Saturday.
