He's here from the Land of the Unprofessionals

It is some time since Mathieson refereed a Burnley match, it was the 1-0 home win against Franchise over two years ago when a Glen Little goal won it for the Clarets. Prior to that it was that magnificent night at Birmingham a year earlier when again Glen was on the scoresheet (twice) as we won 3-2 to stay top of the league.

Interestingly he had always been thought of as an unlucky omen before these games and a look at the list shows he was referee when we conceded four first half goals at Bury on Boxing Day 1999 and a season later was in charge as a Robbie Blake inspired Forest beat us 5-0.

This season to date he has refereed a total of ten games with twenty- three yellow cards and two red cards, the most recent of which was the dismissal of Preston’s Claude Davis in their Carling Cup win at Leicester.

Ten of those yellow cards have gone to home players, although Bradford City picked up half of those in one match, with the other thirteen going the way of away players. Both players sent off were playing for the away team, Luton’s Leon Barnett was the other.

He’s not a referee who likes the limelight and so there is hope that we will be able to get on with the game tonight rather than having to watch him for ninety minutes.

He will be assisted by David McCallum (Tyne and Wear) and David Unsworth (Lancashire).
