Tranmere's Simon Haworth sees red last week
He is Scott Mathieson and he comes straight from last week’s 2nd Division game between Tranmere and Wigan, a game where he sent off Wigan’s Andy Liddle and then Tranmere’s Simon Haworth. In seven games this season he has sent off just one other player and that was Brighton’s Robbie Pethick in their 1-0 defeat at Millwall.

There have been 23 yellow cards in the seven games and these have been fairly distributed with 11 to home team players and 12 to away team players. The most in any game was the seven he issued in the 1st Division game between Sheffield United and Rotherham.

A look back at last season shows just short of three yellow cards per game with 95 from 33 games and 7 red cards. Three of those red cards came in the one game between Lincoln and Oxford.

His one Burnley game last season was one of the best games of the season, our 3-2 win at Birmingham with both sides receiving two yellow cards. Ours went to Alan Moore and Steve Davis.

Steve Davis also went into his book when he took charge of our 5-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest back in October 2000. Andy Payton was also booked along with two Forest players.

It was in our promotion season though that Mathieson went card crazy when he waved his yellow card eight times and his red card twice in our 4-2 defeat at Bury. Steve Davis (he always gets Steve Davis) and Bury’s Chris Swailes were the two sent off with Graham Branch, Andy Cooke, Tom Cowan and Glen Little seeing yellow.

His last appearance at Turf Moor though was as far back as January 1999 and our 2-1 defeat against Chesterfield. He had a quiet afternoon with just one Chesterfield player booked. It was the Clarets who were poor that day.

One current member of the Turf Moor staff will remember Mathieson though, Community coach and former Burnley defender Gerry Harrison. He sent him off at Shrewsbury back in 1995 when Gerry couldn't get out of the way of a ball that was hit at him from about five yards. Mathieson showed him a red card for hand ball.
