Heroes in White

Millwall get a lot of bad press, and with some justification at times, so it really is right and proper to promote their activities when they are doing all they can to promote such a good cause.

They have given up their shirt sponsorship this season to promote the Prostate Cancer UK charity but Saturday saw them face Barnsley at home in what they called 'Heroes in White Day'.

They received special dispensation from The Football League to wear their all white away kit and the club have pledged £5 for the charity for every away shirt sold during November. They also had a special 'Heroes in White' t-shirt, worn by both sets of players during the warm up. Those have been on sale for £10 with all he profits going to the charity.

A big well done to them, although I have to question the Movember effort from former Claret Richard Chaplow. There was certainly considerably more hair on his top lip than he sports on his head. But again, well done Chappy.

Millwall won 1-0 with the winner coming from a Scott Wiseman own goal. He'd been a rock for Gibraltar during the international break but his own goal handed the points to the home side.

Chappy might have grown a handle bar moustache but other ex-Clarets were amongst the goals in the Championship and two helping to reduce our lead at the top to goal difference.

David Nugent scored twice to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 win at Leicester. Apparently it was his seventh appearance at Portman Road and he's scored in all seven. So it's not just us he always scores goals against.

Charlie Austin hit a rocket to give QPR a 1-0 win against Charlton. It was reminiscent of the brilliant winner he got for us last season that won our goal of the season. That was against Charlton too, although not the same goalkeeper this time. David Button was in goal against us; Ben Hamer was the goalkeeper beaten on Saturday.

Both Adam Clayton and former Claret Martin Paterson were back in the Huddersfield team on Saturday. There were suggestions that neither would play for the club again after a training ground clash but there they both were and they scored the goals that beat Sheffield Wednesday.

Explaining the turnaround, manager Mark Robins said: "I do things a certain way, but by no stretch of the imagination can we afford to leave our better players out for long periods, but they've got to toe the line."

It was Paterson's first goal for Huddersfield and just one week before he's likely to line up against us for his new club. I'm relieved he got that particular monkey off his back. I'm not saying he won't score again but at least he's no longer destined to score his first Huddersfield goal against us.

Elsewhere in the league there were refereeing problems albeit on quite on the scale of some of those howlers this weekend in the Premier League. And, in the Championship, there is more honesty.

At Stoke we saw that appalling red card decision for Wes Brown only to have to listen the expected Mark Hughes garbage at the end. This bloke is on a par with Billy Davies for (*) . * - choose your own words.

Probably the worst decision in the Championship came at Ewood Park where Grant Hanley brought down Reading's Chris Gunter only for referee Geoff Eltringham to card Gunter for diving. Here home boss Gary Bowyer agreed with Nigel Adkins that the referee had got it wrong.

We were matching the Premier League for goalkeeping errors too, well almost. It wasn't quite an Artur Boruc but Manuel Almunia wasn't far behind as he gifted Bolton the winner at Vicarage Road. It didn't amuse Gianfranco Zola; the Watford manager replaced Almunia at half time.

Finally this week, seeing the Burnley fans pack an away end is something I never get the chance to see. We packed such an away end at Doncaster recently and I've certainly seen that empty. It was almost like a game of spot the Yeovil fan for the televised game on Friday.

Almost forgot to mention who's currently top of the league. It's us and that's eight weeks now since that win at Doncaster lifted us into that position.

The results and stats from the weekend are below along with the leading goalscorers, each club's red and yellow card count, the ten highest and lowest attendances and this week's fixtures which includes tomorrow's Charlton v Doncaster game. That was the one abandoned back in August with Doncaster winning 3-1. They'll be praying there isn't too much rain ahead of the game with Charlton's the worst pitch in the Championship.
