Hegley to referee televised Scunthorpe game

Last updated : 21 January 2011 By Tony Scholes
In fairness he didn't have that bad a game but his decision to send off David Edgar was, in my opinion, a wrong one with neither yellow card looking justified.

He has had some bad games with Burnley, none more so than the 2002/03 defeat at Gillingham. That was the day the fog came down at Priestfield leaving most spectators with very little ability to see much although he did wait until it had cleared to get his red card out twice to send off Dean West and Gareth Taylor. The red card for West was just ridiculous.

This season he'd already sent off Jose Semedo of Charlton on the opening day of the season when Edgar saw his red card, but that particular card has remained in his pocket since and not even his yellow card has seen much action.

He's refereed 19 games this season and incredibly there have been no cards in seven of them. He has handed out 21 yellow cards in those games with only 8 in his last 12 games. Of those cards, 9 have gone to home team players and 12 to away team players.

His last game was the League One game between Dagenham & Redbridge and Rochdale two weeks ago, a game won 1-0 by Rochdale. There were no cards in the game.

Tomorrow the assistants will be Simon Bennett (Staffordshire) and Dave McCallum (Tyne & Wear). The fourth official will be Football League referee Russell Booth (Nottinghamshire) who refereed our recent home game against Leeds.
