Hegley is the referee

Last updated : 20 December 2002 By Tony Scholes

Hegley was appointed to the Football League list in 2001/02 season and this will be only his fifth game in the First Division and none of the previous three have included Gillingham.

He took charge of 28 games in total last season and kept the yellow cards down to a minimum with just 71 whilst he issued seven red cards. This season there have been 62 yellow cards in just 18 games and 19 of those cards have come in the last 3 games.

In a complete break with tradition he has issued more yellow cards to home team players than away players with the figures currently home 35 and away 27.

To add to that there have been just two red cards this season and they came in the same game, Oldham’s 1-0 2nd Division win at Colchester. Oldham’s Clint Hill was first to go and he was soon followed by Mark Warren of Colchester. It was no surprise to see Hill go, it was his eighth red card in the last five seasons.

Hegley’s last game was the Division 3 clash between Exeter City and Swansea last Saturday. Three Exeter players and four Swansea players received yellow cards in a game won 1-0 by Exeter.

Hopefully the referee will have a quieter day tomorrow.
