Heaton - England calling

Last updated : 21 May 2015 By Tony Scholes

I scanned it; saw the words Heaton, Austin and England and then went back to the cricket before suddenly realising what I'd seen. I took in the enormity of the news as Joe Root and Ben Stokes recovered our disastrous start on the first day.

An England squad with a Burnley player named in it. That's something I've been waiting for since 1974, some 41 years ago, when our then goalkeeper Alan Stevenson was called up alongside his club captain Martin Dobson.

Stevo never did win a cap, but Dobbo went on to play for England five times. He played against Portugal in Lisbon in April 1974 with Stevenson on the bench, and that was on a night when we faced Man United at Old Trafford in a league game.

Dobbo's last game for England was against Czechoslovakia in a Euro qualifier in October of that year but by then he'd moved on to Everton. His first four caps were won at Burnley and he remains to this day our 24th and last full England international.

I've been excited by the news so I can only imagine how Tom feels. He's proved to be an excellent goalkeeper for us since arriving two summers ago and my hope now is that he can get onto the pitch in at least one of the two forthcoming games.

The first of them is a friendly against the Republic of Ireland in Dublin on Sunday 7th June to be followed by a Euro qualifier in Slovenia a week later.

He never played competitively alongside Charlie Austin but the pair did pre-season together in 2013 before Austin's move to QPR. Austin is a player who keeps stepping up a level in football whilst continuing to score goals. We all know how well he did for us and his debut season in the Premier League has been an outstanding one for him personally despite the relegation.

There's going to be some real Burnley interest in these two games as the pair join our former loan player Gary Cahill in the squad. But as much as anything, I'd love to see Tom Heaton win his first cap.

I've been busy with the supporters clubs event this week and missed earlier call ups, so a belated well done to both Danny Ings and Michael Keane on being selected in the initial under-21 squad for the Euro under-21 finals. And that's not forgetting another former loan player Nathaniel Chalobah who will be alongside them.

I didn't think I'd ever see a week when three current and three former Burnley players received England call ups. It really is fantastic news for our club and, of course, more so for those six players.
