Harold, at the time a half back, joined Burnley during the war years and spent almost fifteen years at Turf Moor before ending his career with Rochdale.
He played regularly in war time football but for a number of post-war years he was a reserve team player. He did make nine league appearances in the promotion season of 1946/47, all at right half, losing his place with the signing of Reg Attwell, but then didn't feature at all during the next three seasons back in the First Division.
When he did finally get a run in the first team it was during the 1954/55 and 1955/56 seasons but by that time he was playing at right back and came into the side as a replacement for Jock Aird.
For over a year he was first choice in the number two shirt but the emergence of David Smith and then, more notably, John Angus, saw his first team chances come to and at Turf Moor at the beginning of the 1956/57 season. An away game at Cardiff in August was his 75th and last league and cup game for Burnley.
HIs Burnley career came to an end in July 1957 when he was sold to Rochdale for a small fee. He went on to spend one season at Spotland, making 21 league appearances, before hanging up his boots at the age of 33.
