Hampton returns to Turf Moor

Hampton was the left-back that day and had been with the Clarets for three years after successful spells with both Leeds and Stoke. Although Oldham born he spent most of his childhood years in Burnley before pursuing his football career.

He was one of John Bond’s signings of 1984 as the Burnley boss looked to rebuild his squad although by the time he made his debut we were under new management in John Benson. He was signed to replace Willie Donachie who had been released.

It was probably the worst three years of any to be involved with Burnley Football Club, relegated to the fourth division in his first season, a near financial collapse in the next and then the great escape and the Orient game in the third and last.

Although a regular in the first team during those three years he never played as well as he had done for either Leeds or Stoke and at 32 he was one of the players released as Brian Miller started the task of putting a new squad together.

He later played for both Rochdale and Carlisle and was physio at Carlisle for a number of years after he retired. He was more recently manager of Workington Town but was replaced by another former Claret of the 1980s Tommy Cassidy.
