Grezza thanks former boss

Graham Alexander
Alexander had been at Deepdale for over eight years, often getting our backs up with his constant penalty conversions against us. But, with no new deal on the table from North End, it looked as though his days were numbered.

That's when Cotterill moved in to sign him for Burnley in a £200,000 deal and gave him a place in the team in a holding midfield role for our league game at Colchester.

Speaking to the Lancashire Telegraph, Grezza said: "Steve showed a lot of confidence in me at 36 to sign me from Preston and give me a two-year contract. He obviously believed in me at that time and it was a great boost to my confidence to come and play for a manager like that. It was just a shame it was only for two or three months. He gave me nothing but support from the day I signed."

Grezza was, though, surprised, to get that midfield position at the time. "I hadn't played in midfield for probably eight to ten years, since before my time at Preston. Steve obviously saw a little bit of a future for me in that role and knew that I could give something to the team playing in central midfield.

"It was only the injury to Duffo with his knee that made me go back to right back. When Owen took over after a while he put me back in midfield, but Cotts put me in there early doors."
