Grezza signs on the dotted line

Signed in August 2007 by previous manager Steve Cotterill on a two year contract he's proved to be an influential player for the Clarets particularly during last season when he started every game as we went all the way to the Premier League.

He was offered a new deal some time before the end of the season and the club confirmed everything had been agreed. Almost certainly it was the play offs and the need to concentrate on them that held things up.

But today, he's signed the deal and Grezza, 38 in October, will be a Burnley player for a further year and can now prepare to make his Premier League debut and with just eleven games to go he will soon be making his century of league appearances for the Clarets.

It is news that will be more than well received by Burnley fans. Many weren't too sure when he first arrived at Turf Moor and Cotterill played him in a holding role in midfield where he planned to have John Spicer and Chris McCann playing in front of him.

Injury to Michael Duff put paid to those plans but Owen Coyle quickly restored him to that position early in the 2008/09 season and that's where he has played for most of the games as the Clarets have stormed into the Premier League.

It was said recently by chairman Barry Kilby that the contract extension for Owen Coyle could be the best deal we do all summer. I don't think anyone could disagree, but this one won't be far behind it.
