Goalkeeper set for trial

The 22 year-old Irish keeper was first choice at Meadow Lane last season but refused a new deal in the summer and has since been on a week to week deal with the League Two club and has not figured in the first team this season.

Because of this uncertainly manager Gudjon Thordarson brought in two more goalkeepers in Kevin Pilkington and Shaun Marshall and this has meant Deeney has not been included with the first team this season.

The Nottingham club retained him on a week to week deal because, due to his age it meant that any club taking him would have to pay them a fee but trials with Bristol City, Crewe and Sheffield United during pre-season failed to win him a contract elsewhere.

This week Notts County decided to bring the matter to and end handed him his notice which means from next week he will be a free agent. Steve Cotterill has moved in quickly and has offered Deeney a trial although this has been further complicated by the fact that he has also agreed to play for Burton Albion in the Conference on a non-contract basis.

In fact he made his debut for Burton today in their 3-1 win over Stevenage Borough but manager Nigel Clough has accepted that he might not be able to keep him.

“Saul will be training with Burnley next week but hopefully he will play a few games for us,” Clough said ahead of today’s game. “We have been monitoring his situation for a while because he turned down a new contract at Meadow Lane in June.

“At this moment it suits both parties to have a look at each other, and if nothing materialises at Burnley it is possible he might enjoy it and stay with us.”
