Goal of the Month - Nugent or Nugent v Sunderland?

David Nugent
It was a good turn from Fletcher before he placed his right foot shot into the bottom corner and although Eagles' goal was a simple finish it owed much to the brilliance of Fernando Guerrero in the build up.

In total those two Barnsley goals won just 1.5% of the vote and for the rest it was a matter of whether David Nugent's first Burnley goal, or his second nineteen minutes later, would become the second monthly goal of the winner this season.

The first, my choice, was down to the fantastic build up down the right hand side involving both Eagles and Tyrone Mears before Wade Elliott played in a dream of a cross (the words of Andy Gray and Paul Fletcher, not mine) that simply begged Nugent to head home.

The second came from an Elliott run that was so reminiscent of the run that led to the goal at Wembley. This time he played it out to Mears on the right who in turn got the ball into the box for Nugent. The on loan striker had his back to goal but turned before planting a left footer into the corner.

His first or his second? The voting, over three days, saw the lead change hands countless times but in the end his second, and Burnley's third, proved to be the winner. It won 54.9% of the vote with that earlier goal polling just 42.7%.

The goal joins Robbie Blake as a monthly winner, his goal against Manchester United was a massive winner of the August vote, and we've already got two good candidates for October from the 2-1 win against Birmingham.

For now, the vote is underway for the man of the match in that game against Birmingham. It's in the usual place on the front page and will run until the end of tomorrow.
