Glen in talkative mood

Talking to the Lancashire Evening Telegraph Glen spoke about the signings of Ian Wright and Paul Gascoigne at Burnley and what a sad sight Gazza was as he prepared for games at the Turf.

Of Wrighty he said, “There was a bit of banter and he was a noisy bloke but to be fair he wasn’t around too often with is TV shows and celebrity lifestyle.

“Funnily enough he never really played well and the first few games were a nightmare. Ian was injured and the gaffer made a brave decision to drop him to the bench. That was a masterstroke because he came on and his goals turned out to be vitally important.”

The memories of Gazza are not the same though as he failed to make any sort of impact after arriving from Everton.

“Gazza seemed to be okay in training,” said Glen. “But there was no pressure and it was incredible to see the state he got into before a match. He was such an insecure person and for someone who was the greatest player England has ever had, it was a sad, sad sight.

“You wanted to shake him up and tell him everything was going to be fine, but I think so much had gone on in his life and it finally all caught up with him.”

He spoke about his time with Stan at Burnley and how he turned things round after Chris Waddle although admitted that Stan’s first season was worse than Waddle’s season.

But he also told how it had to be playing for Stan. “You have to be mentally strong and I’ve always been that. I’ve had my run-ins with Stan over the years at Burnley, but that is part and parcel of football,” said Glen.

“He’s swung for me a few times and you have your rows and square-up, but as long as you don’t take it to heart that’s the important thing.

“I’ve been hit with a bottle, called everything under the sun and even had the right hook but the day Stan stops shouting in your ear, that’s the day you get worried and that’s the way I’ve always seen it.

“He might not be everyone’s cup of tea and people might not like the way he does things but that’s the way it is with him.”

And finally he spoke about his move to Reading which is drawing closer after he completed the first part of his medical. It is, he said, a decision he made months ago.

He told the press at Reading, “The move has been going on for three or four months but nothing could happen because Burnley were battling against relegation and it was always going to be a case of waiting until the end of the season.

“I spoke to Steve Coppell and there were never any problems. There were two or three other interested parties but when I realised one was Reading there was never any doubt.

“I’m looking forward to having a good go next season. A three year contract is perfect and it that time you’d like to think we could push for promotion and get into the Premiership.”
